More than 100 cases were reported outside China, in 22 countries.
213 people have died from the new virus - all deaths have been reported in China. This is far less than the death toll of the SARS epidemic when 774 people died.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared a state of emergency because of the virus's corona globally as the virus continues to spread beyond China's borders.
"The main reason is not what is happening in China, but what is happening in other countries," WHO Director-General Tedros Adanom Gebrejesus said at a news conference in Geneva.
WHO is concerned that the virus could spread to countries with poorer health systems.
In most cases outside China, these are people who were in the Chinese city of Wuhan, where the virus originated.
But in Germany, Japan, Vietnam, America, Thailand and South Korea, cases of people who have previously transmitted the virus to China have been reported.

The chairman of the Wuhan Communist Party said measures had to be taken earlier in the city to prevent the spread of the virus.
"If strict controls were taken earlier, the consequences would be less than they are now," Ma Gukiang told China's Public Service.
"The epidemic may have somehow been avoided, and we would not be in this situation now."
New Corona Virus and SARS: Similarities and Differences
SARS is also a type of virus corona. It appeared in China and then expanded to 26 countries in the early 2000s.
The new Corona virus has spread from Wuhan to a smaller number of countries. Although more people are infected with it than SARS, the number of deaths is lower. On Wednesday, it was confirmed that the number of infected people was higher than the number of patients with SARS.
